Why Hamburger Hill looks like a 1990s FPS
Hamburger Hill is a 2026 game that looks deliberately older than 2026. The official screenshots show low-detail 3D rooms, pixel characters, a weapon filling the bottom of the frame, and a squad bar that could have shipped on a late-1990s PC. That is a look. It is not a claim that id Software’s tools are inside the zip.
I compared the gallery stills with the trailer and with the way players describe them. I did not find a Wesware post that says “we were inspired by Doom.” The closest lines are player comments. I am quoting those as comments. Doom (1993), Quake (1996), and Duke Nukem 3D (1996) are here only as the games people mean when they say that era.
What is actually on screen
- Characters are sprites, not modern character models. The squad portraits are painted busts in a grid.
- Terrain is simple 3D: jungle floors, box buildings, a weapon held in the foreground.
- The HUD is a dark strip with numbers, not a full-screen cinematic letterbox.
- The itch.io tags include Procedural Generation. The tag does not document what is generated or rule out hand-authored map elements.
The 1990s games people are pointing at
| Game | Year and studio | The resemblance people mean |
|---|---|---|
| Doom | 1993, id Software | Sprite enemies, fast fights, a weapon in the foreground |
| Duke Nukem 3D | 1996, 3D Realms | Sprite characters inside simple 3D rooms |
| Quake | 1996, id Software | Early full-3D combat. Hamburger Hill is less “Quake” and more sprite-on-3D |
Beeshings, on 26 October 2026, called the result old-school and compared the structure to Risk plus older Delta Force games plus roguelite resource choices. That mix is why “boomer shooter” only half fits. The shooting looks like that era. The campaign layer, with a squad you keep and a map you plan, is doing something those arcade FPS games did not.

Questions
Is Hamburger Hill a Doom-engine game?
No technical document says that. A commenter called it “a Viet Nam war game with a DOOM-era engine.” That is a comparison, not an engine credit. Wesware’s tags are 3D, FPS, military, procedural generation, tactical, violent, and war.
Is the pixel art hand-drawn?
The store page does not say. The same page is tagged AI Assisted for graphics. The developer has not identified which assets involved AI or how much manual work was done. The label alone establishes neither “all hand-painted” nor “all generated.”
What do players compare it to?
On the itch.io thread, players mentioned Super NES memories, a retro DOS style, and “History as Doom Games” graphics. Beeshings called it old-school. Psychotronic’s title says “RETRO Vietnam War Game.” None of those lines are a studio interview.
